Get Glowing This Winter!

Summer Layton, founder and owner of Richmond's newest beauty bar, Sugar & Hive, shares a few sweet ways to help your skin glow this winter!

Rosy cheeks are lovely when they’re the result of a healthy glow. But when they’re chapped? I don’t think so…

I had a friend who just accepted that chapped cheeks were winter’s unavoidable blush. Typically, the winter chill can make everyone’s skin a little drier, a little flakier, a little more chapped. But understanding why this happens and how to combat and even prevent it, keeps you one step ahead of the winter season!

What’s the first thing you do when you get in your car? Blast the heat. This change in temperature combined with dry indoor air makes your skin lose water. It’s harder for the skin to stay moist on its own. Naturally, dry-skin conditions such as rosacea, eczema, and dermatitis begin to flare up.

We all have a tendency to find a moisturizer we love and stick to year-round. But finding a heavier oil-based moisturizer for winter is a must. (Tip: just because it’s labeled as a “nighttime cream, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use it during the day. Most night creams are oil-based!) Though a hot bubble bath may seem like the perfect contrast to a cold winter’s day, using cooler water, or just skipping the hot bath entirely, and instead opting for a cool quick shower, actually helps your skin retain moisture! Another go-ahead? Skip the morning cleanse. Use an oil-based cleanser to wash your face at night, followed by a lightweight water-based cleanser to further remove any residue. But in the morning? Skip the cleanse all together, and splash your face with cool water. This helps avoid stripping your skin of natural oils. More moisture in the air means more moisture for your skin -- never under-estimate the power of a humidifier to bring on the humidity, sugar! Your skin will thank you!

The best way to prepare for winter’s kiss is to skip the drugstore and head straight for an esthetician. A sales person won’t be able to diagnose exactly what your specific skin type needs. At Sugar & Hive, we’re less concerned about the latest hot product and more passionate about discovering how certain skin types respond to certain products. We’re here to take the guess work out of guessing, and let you know the products you should be using for your skin type!
